A lot of people think you should post your idea to yourself, but this is unnecessary. It also won’t be much use as evidence. It’s a good idea to get an inventor’s notebook to write down your idea. You can use it to expand on your initial thoughts and create some drawings. Get a witness to sign your journal as proof of when you wrote everything down.

Before you rush ahead and start capitalising on your brilliant idea, do some research. You might discover that someone has already done what you’re thinking. It could turn out there’s absolutely no market for you product. First, try looking to see if anyone has registered a patent similar to your product idea. If they haven’t, you need to research the market too. There’s no point trying to sell something that people won’t buy. You should also ensure you can manufacture your product and make a profit. If manufacturing costs are high, profits will be small.

Create a Prototype of Your Product

Next, you need to make a basic model of your product. It doesn’t need to be anywhere near the final thing. Start with a drawing first. Then make a 3D model using whatever materials you have available. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy or work in the way you want the final product to. You can then create a working model of your product. Look for kits and guides that will help you to do this. If you can’t, you can try using a computer program instead.

Apply for a Patent

When you have a complete product, you need to protect it. Before you go through the trouble of filing for a patent, make sure you’ve done your research. You could look into patent attorneys to help you out. They can check that there are no existing patents, as well help you register a new design. They can also assist you later on if you need to defend yourself against an infringement suit.

Once you’ve protected your product, you can begin to take it to market. The first thing you’ll probably want to consider is how you’re going to fund your new business.
