Careers encompass a wide range of professions that span all walks of life and industries. The career, as the metaphor, is a person’s journey through education, work and various other aspects of daily life. There are many ways to explain the profession and the word is even used in various different ways. A good example is careers in the sciences; although this seems like a broad description, it can be broken down into specific branches.
One example is a pharmaceutical job which involves making decisions about the manufacture and dispensation of medicines. Medical careers require a person to be able to do research and analysis on new ways to treat diseases, such as cancer. The decision-making part of the career involves weighing up the pros and cons of a particular treatment option. This requires the ability to weigh up all the facts and then come to a rational conclusion about whether it is the right choice for the patient or not. Often, a career like this requires years of higher education, but you can train for other careers on sites like LinkedIn where a LinkedIn Certificate shows formal recognition of acquired knowledge.
Careers in the public sector are available in the sectors of Education, Administration, Arts and Human Services. These careers require the ability to perform important functions in government and industry bodies. Careers within these sectors usually involve project-based employment. Project based careers involve projects where the workers will either complete specific projects or have the opportunity to perform general tasks which are supervised by experienced specialists.
Careers in the retail and service sectors require people who are able to work with a range of other professionals and also interact with customers. An example of a retail career would be a cashier, sales assistant or inventory clerk. In the services sector, these are careers that require individuals to have knowledge in areas such as administration, management and marketing. The ability to communicate and set working environments up is a must for any career within the service sector. The final category, and one that is growing quickly, are the Careers in Law and Legal occupations.
Careers in Law include positions in the courts, police authority, Inspectors of Companies and Advertising agencies. Careers in Legal Services involve the handling of legal affairs, law office work, paralegals and corporate attorneys. Careers in Business Administration involve positions like that of CEO’s, CFO’s, business consultants, accountants etc. There are other categories of careers available as well, including teaching careers in schools and colleges, positions in hospitals, military service, volunteer positions etc. Careers in Government are available as well, including a number of government-related jobs like a statistician, an environmental consultant, a correctional officer, an airport service manager and others.
The key to career success is choosing a career that you can relate to and that fits your personality, abilities and interests. It is important to have a career that offers something you are passionate about. Most importantly, though, it is important to develop the skills to manage your career and work-life balance. With some personal and professional training and a positive outlook, you too can achieve the career success.
