Fearing your interviewer

It is natural to feel a little anxious when someone is asking you loads of questions. It is important to remember that you are not on trial here. Your interviewer is a person, just like you. They are not trying to catch you out and make you say something wrong. In fact, all they are doing is trying to get to know you a little better than they do now. You should not fear that. If you are afraid of your interviewer, it will show.

Lying about your abilities

The worst thing you can do when you go for a job interview is lie about your abilities. When you start telling lies, you will get found out. Your interviewer might not find out straight away, but if they hire you for the job, they will do. Instead, be honest about your skills, and where you need to develop. If you are interviewing for an analyst role, but have yet to get your certifications for business analysts, say so. Tell your interviewer that you don’t have the business analyst certification yet but that you are willing to get them for the role. That will show your interviewer that you are serious about getting a job.

Faking it

Sometimes, when people are nervous, they try to overcompensate. Faking a vibrant personality to get through the job interview might work, but what about when you start the job? Your employer will expect you to be that same bubbly person they met at the interview. If that is not your real personality, it will soon come out, and you will feel stupid. Don’t put on a fake persona. People like staff who are genuine and reliable. If you feel that you need to fake your way through an interview, maybe you are not right for the role at hand. Don’t feel sorry about that. Instead, know what roles suit you and apply for them.

Avoiding eye contact

Your body language says a great deal about you when you are in an interview. If you never make eye contact with your interviewer, they will not like you. That is basic psychology. When you fail to look someone in the eye, they don’t trust you and think that you have something to hide. Don’t make that mistake. Instead, when you meet your interviewer, look them straight in the eye and shake their hand. That move conveys a level of confidence but is not arrogant at all.

Avoiding particular questions

In any interview, your interviewer will ask you questions that you don’t like or don’t want to answer. Remember, your interviewer is trying to find out about you and who you are. Use a simple and modern resume template to help you impress hiring managers especially if it’s your first job application. Any questions that might be asked come from what is written on your resume.  If you dodge or refuse to answer particular questions, your interviewer will not want to hire you. When people are looking for new staff, they want to find people who can take commands. If you are defiant, people will not want you to work for them. If you don’t like a question or fear that your interviewer won’t like your answer, try to put a positive spin on it.
